The Domestic Abuse Research Network (DARNet) is delighted to be hosting a virtual conference on policy responses to gendered violence, which will take place on 15 March 2022. The event is supported by the Social Policy Association.
Context and themes
Since the (re)discovery of violence against women and girls (VAWG) as a major social issue in the 1970s, gendered violence has been the catalyst for, and object of, uneasy, shifting and often controversial alliances between feminists and the state. From the feminist ‘sex wars’ that raged throughout the 1980s to contemporary critiques of ‘carceral feminism’ and the Nordic model, the state’s role in defining and preventing gendered violence and exploitation, responding to perpetration and shaping provision for victim-survivors remains contested within feminist movements.
In a period of intense public concern about gendered violence and renewed (but often polarising) debate about the adequacy and equity of criminal justice responses to VAWG, the event aims to create a space for feminist researchers, advocates, professionals and experts by experience to share knowledge, engage in fruitful dissent and frame concrete policy recommendations for a future free of gendered violence.
The event will begin with three plenary sessions with invited keynote speakers Professor Liz Kelly and Professor Aisha Gill (third speaker TBC).
Each parallel session will feature 2-3 short presentations from contributors, before opening for questions and group discussion.
